You are right.
It is possible to obtain null lat/long if you omit to specify two sights for determining the fix.
The general procedure is to make two sights and save them (the Save button). As the sights are saved, they can be used in a second time for fix (lat/long) determination. Using two sights, the lat/long will no longer be null.
